“Hungarian Christmas”

Christmas is far away, but I would like to share with you a very good experience during the Advent time:

I am guest lecturer for Hungarian at the university of Regensburg (Germany) (here you can read more about this programme) and I try to do my best in sharing the Hungarian culture with my students. So I organized a little “Hungarian Christmas” at the university. And how can be this celebration Hungarian? Of course, there were Hungarian christmas songs, szaloncukor and honey-cake. If you don’t know what is szaloncukor: this is a chocolate in beautiful packing which Hungarians like to put on the christmas tree. But for getting a szaloncukor, you should also do something. So, everybody had to read a Hungarian tongue breaker three times, loud. I think, the favorite one was this:

“E tettetett tettet te tetted, te tettetett tettes.”

Nobody could read this sentence without laughing…

Also we shared an apple with each other. This is a very beautiful Hungarian habit. The meaning is: we will stay together in peace and healthy.

And the girls cooked Luca-dumplings. Hungarians cook these dumplings on the day of Luca (13th December). In each dumpling is a boy name. With the dumplings you can answer the question: What will be the name of my husband?

Here are some pictures from Hungarian Christmas:
